The gift-bearer in Southern Italy is La Befana. She delivers presents on January 6th, at Epiphany. Her name is believed to be derived from "Epiphinia". La Befana is a little old witch woman who flies about on a broom. She also uses her broom to slide down chimneys, delivering presents to good children and filling their stockings with sweets. For bad children she leaves switches or a lump of coal. Sometimes mothers will tell naughty children to behave or La Befana will steal them away. BACK-LIMITED EDITIONS
