For North Americans, the idea of Christmas arriving during the hottest days of the years seems amazing! Yet in Brazil, December 25 comes during the children's summer vacation from school. Santa and his sidekicks, however, arrive in Brazil dressed for winter weather---after all, they spend most of their time at the North Pole! Brazilian youngsters look to Padre Nicholas for a host of Christmas surprises--and according to legend, the gift-giver always brings a group of joyous, elf-like helpers with him to help pass out the bounty. Perhaps less dramatic in his habits than the North American chimney-jumping Santa, Padre Nicholas enters each house calmly through the window--so youngsters make sure that at least one window is ready for his easy access. Rather than filling stockings with gifts, Padre Nicholas asks that youngsters leave their shoes out for him to pack full of presents and treats. He places the overflow around the Christmas tree, then bounds out the window and moves on to the next house on his rounds through Sao Paulo, Brazilia, Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian towns.
