Head vases are figural vases that generally show a woman from the shoulders up. They were used by florists mainly during the 1950's and 1960's. They were made in various sizes and were usually decorated with imitation jewelry of pearl necklaces and/or earrings. They can also be found with religious themed subjects, teenaged girls, babies, and animals. Some were made in the likenesses of well-known celebrities.
They were widely manufactured and imported from Japan. Although various American pottery company produced them as well. Some of the companies included: Inarco, Napco, Lefton, Relpo, Shawnee, Betty Lou Nichols, Enesco, Ucagco, and Lee Wards.
They have become very popular as collectibles in the past 10 years. You can still find them at reasonable prices between $15.00- $50.00 at flea markets, estate sales, and yard sales. However, they have been known to be sold for as much as $500.00 or more for the more rare examples. New examples are still being produced by Lefton and can be purchased for about $25.00. But, be alert and do not mistake them for the antique and/or vintage ones!
