ESKIMO "ESKIMO SANTA & SNOW BABY"(RETIRED)

International Resourcing Santa - Eskimo Santa & Snow Baby - Eskimo Sold!

This is an International Santa known as "Jouluvana" from International Resourcing. It is the Estonia Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been dis- continued since International Resourcing closed its doors. As part of the United States of America, Alaska now em- braces many of the customs of the "lower 48"--yet this vast land puts its own twist on things, in keeping with its Eskimo heritage. "Eskimo Santa and Snow Baby" pay tribute to the climate and customs of Alaska, yet many elements remain familiar to those who know the American Santa Claus. To make their way across the "frozen tundra", both Santa and his snow baby helper wear snowshoes. Santa's coat is a furry brown color instead of the more familiar red, yet his red pants and cap, and the fur trimmings of his outfit all seem in keeping with our traditional Amer- ican notions of St. Nick. The familiar sack of toys is very much in evidence, but the snow baby is something spe- cial...added to emphasize the arctic weather and culture of this northernmost American State. This sweet blonde cherub wears an outfit to echo that of Santa himself, but hers is candy pink with white fur trim. She carries her own supply of gifts on a sled and in her arms, and a husky puppy peeks out from behind. Will he soon become a very special present for some lucky youngster? It is in excellent condi- tion; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 3" wide. It is marked "SC59,Eskimo Santa & Snow Baby,Eskimo, 2002,International Resourcing Services,Inc.". ESTONIA "JOULUVANA"(RETIRED-2007)

International Resourcing Santa - Jouluvana - Estonia

This is an International Santa known as "Jouluvana" from International Resourcing. It is the Estonia Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been dis- continued since International Resourcing closed its doors. On Christmas Eve in Estonia, this gnome-like Santa known as “Jouluvana” brings sweets and fruits to good boys and girls, and piles these gifts into and around the youngsters’ slippers. To help “Jouluvana” in his efforts, the children put their slippers on the windowsill before bed. Estonians hold their religious Christmas traditions very dear, yet they also embrace some modern and secular habits at holiday time. Advent calendars serve as the first signs of Christmas in many homes. You might also see families making Christmas crowns that resemble small church chandeliers. On December 24th, it’s tradition for the President of Estonia to declare Christmas Peace during attendance at a Christmas religious service. This ritual began in the 17th century by order of Queen Kristina of Sweden. Estonians will tell you that it’s important to keep all brooms especially clean during Advent because of devils that steal dirty broom sticks and fly around during the Christmas season, playing tricks. Now that the domination of the Soviet Union has been lifted, all of these holiday traditions flourish once again along with the special additions of the Catholics, Russian Orthodox and Lutheran fami- lies. Depending on what family you visit at Christmas, you may enjoy fried goose with apples, fried turkey, pork and Sauerkraut, Pipparkogid cookies, a fireworks display, or a recitation of poetry. He is carrying several gifts in a large basket along with a handful of holly. There is also a pair of boots holding small wrapped gifts. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2-1/2" wide. It is marked "SC68,Jouluvana,Estonia,2003,International Resourcing Services, Inc.".

International Resourcing Santa - Aunt Airie - France

This is "Aunt Airie" from the International Resourcing Santa Claus collection. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. She is not related to Pere Noel, but according to legend she also brings Christmas gifts to the good boys and girls of France! While Santa has been called a "jolly old elf", the ever-smiling "Aunt Airie" is thought to be a fairy. According to the story handed down from generation to generation, she wears a long flowing cape and travels with a donkey that bears the many presents she brings in a bag he carries on his back. All ready for her holiday travels this year, we see a rosy- cheeked "Aunt Airie" making her appearance in a cape the color of the blue night sky. It's richly decorated with golden stars to complement the golden motif on her ruby-red dress. In her hand she carries a bag to match her fur-trimmed cape and from inside the bag a few small presents peek out. "Aunt Airie" and her donkey friend both wear expressions of joy and anticipation as they get ready to distribute the scores of presents in their roomy brown bag. Even the donkey is wearing his finest; a blanket that combines French fleur-de-lis patterns on deep green along with turquoise, orange, pink, and golden accents. Although "Aunt Airie" is expected on Christmas Eve only in certain regions of France, her charming legend has spread throughout the world! It is marked "SC58,Aunt Airie,France,2002, International Resourcing Services,Inc.".

GERMANY "KNECHT REPRECHT"(RETIRED)

International Resourcing Santa - Knecht Reprecht - Germany sold

This is an International Santa known as "Knecht Reprecht" from International Resourcing. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resour- cing closed its doors. Did you ever wonder how Santa has room in his arms to carry all the gifts he brings children in each family he visits? Well, German youngsters know the answer: they believe that Santa's assistant or servant, "Knecht Reprecht", is near at hand to pass out the toys to good children and spank the bad ones with a special rod! Unlike Santa with his velvety robes and elegant accessories, "Knecht Reprecht" wears rough clothing and has a somewhat fierce appearance. His face may look as if it's been blackened by coal or ash--an occupational hazard, perhaps, for someone who slides down so many chimneys. Indeed, some Germans actually call him "ru-klas" or "Rough Nicholas". Legend suggests that his origins may be as a pagan spirit of some type, but today he is solidly Christian, checking children's at- tentiveness to their prayers and punishing them if their scriptural knowledge is lacking. "Knecht Reprecht" is quite the traveler, con- sidering that his legend went along with the first German settlers to Pennsylvania. But on the American side of the Atlantic, he is less fearsome and more of a gentle and serious friend to youngsters. He also makes frequent appearances in Karlsruhe, the Residence-City of the German state of Baden. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 3" wide. It is marked "SC50, Knecht Reprecht,2001,International Resourcing Services,Inc.". It is in its original box and packing.

GREECE "SAINT NICHOLAS"(RETIRED-2000)

International Resourcing Santa - Saint Nicholas - Greece

This is an International Santa known as "Saint Nicholas" from International Resourcing. It is the Greece Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been dis- continued since International Resourcing closed its doors. He is holding a staff in his right hand and carrying his bag of goodies with his left. He is wearing a purple robe trimmed in brown fur and a gold mitre.
The annual arrival of St. Nicholas in Greece is in keeping with the love of water and boating that characterizes the island nation's inhabitants. Santa comes dressed as a sailor with a long flowing beard and makes his "grand entrance" by boat on December 6. That day is set aside as a time of prayer for the safety of all Greek seamen.
The boat in which St. Nicholas arrives is weighed down by the great gift-giver's pack--filled with food treats to enjoy once the December 6 prayers are complete. All of Greece then begins a "food feast" with joyful celebrations, music, and dancing. A special fruit and nut confection called Saint Basil's pie is baked exclusively for this occasion.
The holiday festivities continue in Greece from December 6 all the way until the New Year begins on January 1. Following Orthodox tradition, gifts are not exchanged until that date; and thus the New Year caps off nearly a month of revelry with the offering of special presents. St. Nicholas plays a part in all the Christmas events in Greece--dressed in the flowing robes and peaked hat that characterize his Grecian persona. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-3/4" tall and 2" wide. It is marked
"SC24,Saint Nicholas, Greece,1996,International Resourcing Services,Inc.". Does not include box.

International Resourcing Santa - Saint Nicholas - Greece

This is an International Santa known as "Saint Nicholas" from International Resourcing. It is the Greece Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been dis- continued since International Resourcing closed its doors. Greek Christmas celebrants truly enjoy a full "Twelve Days of Christmas" beginning on Christmas Eve and ending on January 6. The holiday rituals combine modern traditions with religious ceremonies that date back to ancient times. The Greek "St. Nicholas" is shown here in his boat, symbolizing his essential part as the patron of Greek seamen. Indeed, the tradition'says that St. Nick's clothing is always soaked with brine, his beard dripping with seawater, and his brow with perspir- ation because of his efforts to save sinking ships. Every self-respecting Greek sailor travels with St. Nick's icon on board. What's more, they all know of a special ritual that is said to tame rough seas. The sailors cast boiled wheat grain, or kollyva, on the water and ask St. Nicholas to "cease his rush". Here we see St. Nick arriving in his little boat, loaded down with toys for Greek youngsters. These children have to be extraordinarily patient, since he does not show up until New Year's Eve day, heralded by carolers and New Year's bells. Christmas Eve and Christmas are spent with role playing, caroling, feasting, and church going. The Christmas feast traditionally includes turkey salad, meat pies, fried pork, spinach pie and fried auber- gines with cheese. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 3-1/2" tall and 4" long. It is marked "SC49,Saint Nicholas,Greece,2001,International Resourcing Services,Inc.". It is in its original box and packing.

LAPLAND "JOULUPUKKI"

International Resourcing Santa - Joulupukki - Lapland

This is an International Santa ornament known as "Holeiosho" from International Resourcing. It is the Lapland Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. It comes as no surprise that the way-up-North Laplander Santa, Joulupukki, arrives on snowshoes, his trusty reindeer at his side! Both the Laplanders and the Fins share the same holiday traditions and beliefs. And with a few minor exceptions, they are quite similar to those celebrated by North Americans at Christmas.

Joulupukki has a team of elves who assist him, and they are called Joulutonttuja. Alll year long, these trusy elves toil creating toys in a special workshop. But they also have a unique, year-round assignment; they spy on good boys and girls to find out what these youngsters would most like to have for Christmas. Instead of a home base at the North Pole, Laplanders believe that Joulupukki lives happily right in their own coun- tryside, surrounded by reindeer and lots of snow. Since reindeer abound in Lapland, it only makes sense that they would help pull Joulupukki's sleigh on Christmas Eve.

In addition to their love for Joulupukki and all his traditions, folks of Laplander descent enjoy a number of other holiday treats-- just as do all Finnish people. Making gingerbread cookies and houses has been a favorite pasttime in the region since the 1400's. Beloved season decorations include advent calendars, tulips and poinsettias. The Laplanders and Fins enjoy eating pickled herring at Christmas, and drinking a special concoction call "glogg", which combines red wine, spices and raisins. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 5" tall and 2-1/2" wide. It is marked

International Resourcing Santa - Pancho Navidad - Mexico

This is an International Santa ornament known as "Pancho Navidad" from International Resourcing. It is the Santa of Mexico. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. In Mexico, Santa Claus often goes by the name Pancho Navidad. Pancho Navidad crept into Mexican Christmas lore rather recently, but he is gaining popular- ity every year. Pancho Navidad does not traditionally bring gifts in Mexico. Instead, the piñata is the source of Christmas goodies. The piñata is a clay vessel shaped like an animal and covered with bright colored tissue. Mexican children take turns striking at the Piñata with a stick while blindfolded. When the piñata is broken, candy and trinkets fly out. Christmas festivities begin in Mexico nine days before December 25th. Each day a different home in the village serves as the "posadas", which means lodgings. A procession is formed to reenact the journey of Mary and Joseph into Jerusalem. The procession is accompanied by a guitar and Christmas carolers. When the group arrives at the preselected posadas, they place figures representing the Holy Family onto a temporary altar. After the cere- mony, celebrations continue for the rest of the evening. It was retired in 1997. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2" wide. It is marked "SC14,Mexico,Pancho Navidad,1993, International Resourcing". NORWAY "JULENISSE"(RETIRED)

International Resourcing Santa - Julenisse - Norway Sold!

This is an International Santa known as "Julenisse" from International Resourcing. It is the Norway Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been dis- continued since International Resourcing closed its doors. From ancient times, children in Norway have appreciated the bounty of "Julenisse". According to legend, this mystical, elf-like character visited homes on Christmas Eve and placed tufts of "lucky" barley stocks here and there. The family then would seek these on Christmas morning, hoping for good luck throughout the year to come. As the story evolved and merged with that of St. Nicholas, "Julenisse" expanded his role and began offering gifts on Christmas Eve as well. The straw dolls and figures he brings with him serve as symbols of those original barley stocks, linking today's "Julenisse" to that long-ago Norse character. Here we see the "Christmas Elf" dressed in a red cap and jacket much like those of St. Nicholas. His long white beard and bag of toys link him to that famous character as well...but his pointy shoes with the bells on the tips are distinctive to "Julenisse"! Another traditional Norwegian story says that only the family cat is privileged to spy "Julenisse" upon his arrival, so here we see a kitty happily observing this very special visitor. Holiday observances in Norway begin at the time of the sol- stice on December 21st as they have since ancient times. Cleaning, cooking and other preparations give way to feast, celebrations and gift-giving lasting many days. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 3-1/2" tall and 4" long. It is marked "SC57,Julenisse,Norway,2002, International Resourcing Services,Inc.". It is in its ori- ginal box and packing.

POLAND "ST. NICHOLAS"(RETIRED)

International Resourcing Santa - St. Nicholas - Poland

This is an International Santa known as "St. Nicholas" from International Resourcing. It is the Poland Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been dis- continued since International Resourcing closed its doors. Dressed in glorious robes and bearing hearts and apples, St. Nicholas helps celebrate Christmas in Poland through a host of wonderful traditions and super- stitions. Poles believe that Christmas Eve not only serves as a day for family get-togethers and reconcili- ations--it's also a time when animals can talk and even tell the future! Many Poles can be heard to say, "As goes Christmas Eve, so goes the year", and thus they try their best to be kind, forgiving, jolly and upbeat on this most important of days.

Christmas superstitions in rural Poland often focus on how soon a single girl will be married. If a girl grinds poppy seed on Christmas Eve, legend has it, she can hope for a wedding soon. After dinner, when this girl leaves the house, she listens for the first dog to bark. The direction of the bark indicates where her true love will come from! Many other traditions having to do witha a girl's upcoming marriage focus on picket fences, water, wood, iron, leather, and even dreams

On Christmas Eve, according to tradition, Polish women clean and sweep their houses thoroughly, then cook a traditional meal with 12 dishes. The more each person eats, the more pleasure is thought to be on the way to his or her future. Polish Christmas carols date back to the 1300s, and are sung with great gusto even today. Another wonderful tradition is that of the Polish creche, with annual competitions for the best creche held in Cracow. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2-1/2" wide. It is marked

PORTUGAL "PADRE NICHOLAS"(RETIRED)

International Resourcing Santa - Padre Nicholas - Portugal sold

This is an International Santa known as "Padre Nicholas" from International Resourcing. It is the Portugal Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been dis- continued since International Resourcing closed its doors. As Christmas approaches in Portugal, families decorate pine trees with stars, tiny ball ornaments, knots, and bright electric lights. They prepare for the arrival of Padre Nicholas and the Three Kings, all of whom are generous gift-givers according to various le- gends. Home decorations add to the festive atmosphere, and include holly, paper ribbons, dried flowers and ele- gant candles.

Food plays a major part in Portuguese Christmas tradition. The favorite entree is boiled codfish, imported from Norway, for Christmas supper, as well as roasted'turkey for Christmas lunch on December 25. Portuguese Christmas candies include sweet vermicelli, or King Cake, in which one piece always has a dry bean. The person who gets a bean in his or her slice of cake must buy another cake for New Year's Eve. The Portuguese also enjoy a special feast just after midnight on Christmas. It is called consoada, and it involves setting extra places at the table for alminhas a penar, or "the souls of the dead". Another custom is to leave crumbs on the hearth for these souls to scoop up, in exchange for a bountiful harvest to come.

Also traditional for Portuguese Christmas is the Yule Log, or fogueira da consoada, which is burned either in the home hearth or in the church yard. The ashes of this log are kept and burned along with pinecones later in the year, during the thunderstorm season. Legend has it that where the smoke of that fire rises, no thunderbolts will strike. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 3" wide. It is marked
"SC46,Padre Nicholas,Portugal,2000,International Resourcing Ser- vices,". He is in his original box.

INTERNATIONAL SANTA ORNAMENT
SCOTLAND "THE FIRST FOOTER"

International Resourcing Santa - The First Footer - Scotland Sold!

This is an International Santa ornament known as "The First Footer" from International Resourcing. It is the Scotland Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since In- ternational Resourcing closed its doors. From the 17th Century, when Puritans ruled, Christmas holiday customs were outlawed. Hence, Christmas never re- covered as the main festival day in Scotland. Instead, New Year's Day(or Hogmanay) became the joyous time of year. The most important character of Hogmanay is "The First Footer" or bearer of good luck--the first visitor to someone's home on New Year's Day. He brings with him a piece of coal, some bread, and some money or salt--gifts which symbolize his wishes for the family to have warmth, food and wealth. This "First Footer" is dressed in green Scottish kilts, sash, a red jacket and feathered tam. He carries an armful of evergreens, which symbolize continuing life and a bag of toys over his shoulder. There are toys and packages at his feet. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 3" tall and 1-3/4" wide. It is marked "SCO27,1997,IRS".

INTERNATIONAL SANTA
SLOVAKIA "ST. MIKULASE"(RETIRED)

International Resourcing Santa - St. Mikulase - Slovakia Sold!

This is an International Santa ornament known as "St. Mikulase" from International Resourcing. It is the Slovakia Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since In- ternational Resourcing closed its doors. He is said to descend from heaven on a golden cord, carrying his Christmas gifts of apples, nuts and candy in a basket on his back. "St. Mikulase" of Slovakia always arrives with a companion dressed in black. This character carries a switch to pun- ish naughty children--especcially those unable to say their prayers on command. Once the children are asleep on Christmas Eve, St. Mikulase leaves toys and candy in the shoes of the good boys and girls, and potato or onion peelings in the shoes of those who were bad!

Slovaks believe it takes two days to "do Christmas right", so they call December 25 "First Christmas" and December 26 "Second Christmas". After a big meal on Christmas Eve, Slovak families light their holi- day trees and arrange the gifts underneath. The tree is seldom decorated before Christmas Eve, and if it must be prepared early, it is likely to be kept hidden in a spare room and only unveiled on the big evening. Tree decorations include stars, mobiles, and other homemade crafts.

Favorite foods at holiday time in Slovakia include carp, a pudding called kuba, a fruit stew called masika, and a braided white Christmas bread known as calta. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It mea- sures 4-1/2" tall and 1-3/4" wide. It is marked
"SC37, 1999,Mikolase,Slovakia,International Resources LLC". It is in its original box and packing.

INTERNATIONAL SANTA
TURKEY "ST. NICHOLAS"(RETIRED)

International Resourcing Santa - St. Nicholas - Turkey

This is an International Santa ornament known as "St. Nicholas" from International Resourcing. It is the Turkey Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since In- ternational Resourcing closed its doors. While the legend of St. Nicholas extends all over the world, the "real" St. Nicholas lived in Turkey! St. Nicholas was the bishop of an area called Myra, located in southwestern Turkey, during the early fourth century. While the details of his life are sketchy, it is known that he did many good deeds involving both children and sailors. A study of medieval and Renaissance artwork find this image appearing in a number of paintings, stained glass windows and carvings. The composite "look" of these many works of art shows St. Nick to be a tall, dignified man. Unlike the jolly American Santa with his smile and "ho, ho, ho," the Turkish St. Nicholas was quite serious...even severe. His fame grew as the centuries passed, and he bacame established as the patron saint of chil- dren, unmarried girls and sailors in both the Roman and Orthodox churches. His original feast day was December 6, but eventually it was moved to December 25 by Pope Julius I to celebrate the birth of Christ. St. Nicholas lost popularity during the Reformation, except in Protestant Holland, where Sinter Klass filled wooden shoes with gifts. Today both in Turkey and around the world, St. Nicholas has been re-estab- lished as one of the most powerful symbols of Christmas. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-3/4" tall and 2" wide. It is marked "SC54, 2001,St.Nicholas,Turkey,International Resources LLC". It is in its original box and packing.
