INTERNATIONAL RESOURCING
INTERNATIONAL SANTA
IRELAND "MRS. IRISH FATHER CHRISTMAS"(RETIRED-2003)

International Resourcing Santa - Mrs. Irish Father Christmas - Ireland-sold sold

This is an International Santa from Ireland known as "Mrs. Irish Father Christmas" from International Resourcing. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. She's dressed in green and red finery, and to the Irish at holiday time, "Mrs. Irish Father Christmas" combines the best of both the North Pole and their beloved Emerald Isle. If Santa's wife were Irish, we can imagine that she'd celebrate Christmas with a special flair. She'd emphasize the green in her husband's favorite holiday color scheme -- in this case wearing a stunning emerald cape trimmed in white. Her Irish influences continue with lace touches on her red and white blouse, and a lace-trimmed apron over her full red skirt. Note the shamrock handkerchief that peeks out from her apron pocket. And even her Christmas cake has a shamrock design on top -- her preference over the traditional holly! Imagine the fun of St. Patrick's Day at the North Pole with this Mrs. Father Christmas in charge. Why, she might even invite some leprechauns to help her husband's elves with their toy making chores! And she'd be sure to fix some corned beef and cabbage every New Year's, too -- not to mention the gentle Celtic tunes she'd play to relax Santa and his crew after a long day of work! Faith and begorrah, she's a lovely Irish lass and there's no doubt about that! It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/4" tall and 2-1/2" wide. It is marked "MC01,Mrs. Irish Father Christmas,Ireland, 1999,International Resourcing Services,Inc.". It is in its original box and packing.

INTERNATIONAL SANTA
ITALY "BABBO NATALE"(RETIRED-2005)

International Resourcing Santa - Babbo Natale - Italy-sold sold

This is an International Santa known as "Babbo Natale" from International Resourcing. It is the Italy Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. He is wearing a long red robe and cap, trimmed in gold, white and blue, a gold belt with bells, and black boots. He is holding a gold staff with a bag over his shoulder filled with toys. While "La Befana" the female Santa Claus of Italy, is the traditional choice for holiday cheer, many Italian children today set their hopes on "Babbo Natale", the male version of "Old St. Nick". But no matter which holiday visitor is expected from the North Pole, the Italian Christmas Eve features the same joyful traditions from year to year. First, the candles are lighted. Then, the "Urn of Fate" is produced with much fanfare. This handsome vessel is overflowing with packages for every member of the family. Everyone may take a turn, however, Mother always gets to draw for the first present. Then others may try, but they can only open the package they've drawn if it has their name on it! You can imagine the jolly scene as packages are drawn again and again until everyone has their own gift in hand. The job of "La Befana" and "Babbo Natale" comes later in the evening, after Italy's famous "Feast of Three Kings". Italian youngsters set out their shoes or hang stockings for Santa to fill once they are asleep! Who wouldn't look forward to a visit from a happy gift- bearer like our "Babbo Natale"? His bright red robe features embroidered borders and cuffs, and his golden staff wonderfully complements the gold trim on his belt and tasseled cap. He carries a shoulder bag full of won- derful treats and little presents, everything from puppets and fruit for the little ones to vintage Italian wine for Mother and Father! It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2" wide. It is marked "SC31, Babbo Natale, Italy, 1998, International Resourcing". It is in its original box and packing.

INTERNATIONAL SANTA
JAPAN "HOTEIOSHO"(RETIRED)

International Resourcing Santa - Hoteiosho - Japan-SOLD sold

This is an International Santa known as "Hoteiosho" from International Resourcing. It is the Japan Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. He is wearing a cranberry gold trimmed cap with a cranberry and purple coat and and red sandals. He is reversible. For the opposite view, see the ornament below. Only about 1% of Japan's population are Christians, but since WWII many Japanese have begun observing Christmas with all the secular festivities and customs of the American holiday. One reason for this "cultural adoption" was the influence of Amer- ican GIs in Japan. Another was the Japanese toymaking industry, which exposed workers and their families to everything from Christmas ornaments to dolls and games for youngsters at holiday time. The minority Japanese Christians use Christmas as a way to share their beliefs and customs with others. The Japanese equivalent of Santa Claus is "Hoteiosho", one of the gods of the Japanese pantheon. "Hoteiosho" perhaps was selected for this job because he has eyes in the back of his head--the better to check up on youngsters to see who has been "naughty or nice". This kindly gift-giver visits the Japanese home where he may observe families eating turkey in rooms adorned with mistletoe and holly, or singing traditional Christmas carols in Japanese translation. Here we see him as a cheery "two-faced" character, arriving in jewel-toned holiday robes to hand out his gifts including fans, good things to eat, musical instruments and dolls. In Japan, New Years Day, known as Oshogatsu, is the leading holiday. Pine branches and bamboo are used as decorations for the home, and trees are decorated with toys which later become gifts for the youngsters. Businesses close for three days of celebration as Japa- nese families gather together for a New Years festival that greatly resembles Christmas in Europe and America. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2" wide. It is marked "SC30,Hoteiosho,1997,Japan". It is in its original box.

LAPLAND "JOULUPUKKI" (RETIRED-2004)

International Resourcing Santa - Joulupukki - Lapland-sold sold

This is an International Santa known as "Joulupukki" from International Resourcing. It is the Lapland Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. It comes as no surprise that the way-up-North Laplander Santa, Joulupukki, arrives on snowshoes, his trusty reindeer at his side! Both the Laplanders and the Fins share the same holiday traditions and beliefs. And with a few minor exceptions, they are quite similar to those celebrated by North Americans at Christmas.

Joulupukki has a team of elves who assist him, and they are called Joulutonttuja. Alll year long, these trusy elves toil creating toys in a special workshop. But they also have a unique, year-round assignment; they spy on good boys and girls to find out what these youngsters would most like to have for Christmas. Instead of a home base at the North Pole, Laplanders believe that Joulupukki lives happily right in their own coun- tryside, surrounded by reindeer and lots of snow. Since reindeer abound in Lapland, it only makes sense that they would help pull Joulupukki's sleigh on Christmas Eve.

In addition to their love for Joulupukki and all his traditions, folks of Laplander descent enjoy a number of other holiday treats-- just as do all Finnish people. Making gingerbread cookies and houses has been a favorite pasttime in the region since the 1400's. Beloved season decorations include advent calendars, tulips and poinsettias. The Laplanders and Fins enjoy eating pickled herring at Christmas, and drinking a special concoction call "glogg", which combines red wine, spices and raisins. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 5" tall and 2-1/2" wide. It is marked

LUXEMBOURG "ST. NICHOLAS" (RETIRED-2003)

International Resourcing Santa - St. Nicholas - Luxembourg-sold sold

This is an International Santa known as "St. Nicholas" of Luxembourg from International Resourcing. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since Interna- tional Resourcing closed its doors. By the time Christmas rolls around in Luxembourg each year, there is no Santa Claus in sight--however, "St. Nicholas Day" is marked on December 6th. Beginning in the evening, a week before this date, children put their slippers in front of their bedroom doors in hopes that St. Nicholas will arrive with a small gift during the night. On the night of December 5th, children put a plate on the kitchen or dining room table, then run in the next morning to find that St. Nicholas has filled it with sweets and gifts overnight. St. Nicholas also pays visits to children in their schools. Starting in the beginning of December, streets and store windows in all the cities are brightly lighted and decorated. Christmas trees, gloriously adorned, are seen in all public squares. Out- door Christmas markets lure shoppers as well. Most folks in Luxembourg celebrate Christmas Eve with their family and friends. Midnight Mass is popular as well, and then the family gathers for supper featuring a typical Luxembourg winter menu: black pudding with mashed potatoes and apple sauce. The Midnight Mass in the Benedictine Abbey of St. Maurice and St. Maure in Clervaux (a small and charming Ardennes town) is internationally renowned and often televised nationwide. Clubs and associations also plan special events for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Some groups produce Nativity plays, with children as actors, while others perform concerts on Christmas afternoon. Traditionally in some villages, these concerts are followed by a Christmas tree auction, with profits earmarked for charity. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2-1/2" wide. It is marked "SC47, St. Nicholas, Luxembourg, 2000, International Resourcing". It is in its original box.

MALAYSIAN "SANTA CLAUS" (RETIRED-2008)

International Resourcing Santa - Santa Claus - Malaysia

This is an International Santa known as "Santa Claus" of Malaysia from International Resourcing. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since Interna- tional Resourcing closed its doors. As in many other parts of the world, Santa Claus in Malaysia sports his usual red coat. It may be of the all-weather wool variety, however, given Malaysia's proximity to the equator. While a white Christmas might be prevalent elsewhere, in Malaysia it is bursting with color. Here in the tropics, Christmas is a spectacle of brilliant lights and pageantry. Celebrations begin early in the month of December and con- tinue throughout the whole month. Certainly the traditional colors abound, but bright decorations adorn trees, enhanced with an Asian and Pacific Rim influence. Christmas parties are held by most hotels with the appearance of Santa Claus bringing cheer to children and adults alike. Giggling children will whisper in Santa's ear, as they do else- where, giving him a list of wishes for toys and treats. As is customary in Malaysia during festivals, families may entertain guests in their homes throughout the day, in adherence to the concept of "rumah terbuka" or "open house". This practice makes the celebration more meaningful and in line with the spirit of the season. Gifts will be placed under the showy trees, exchanged by family members on Christmas Day. A festive spirit abounds. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/4" tall and 3" wide. It is marked "SC78, Santa Claus, Malaysian, 2005, International Santas". It is in its original box.

MEXICO "EL NINO" (RETIRED-2006)

International Resourcing Santa - El Nino - Mexico

This is an International figurine known as "El Nino" of Mexico from International Resourcing. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. The Christ Child celebrates Christmas in Mexico with south of the border style, appearing as "El Nino" in his woven straw basket, wearing a straw hat, and surrounded by poinsettias and holiday gifts. He makes his entrance on the back of a gentle burro that is adorned with Mexican-print blankets and bells. Preparations for Christmas in Mexico begin early in December, with wonderful market stalls set up in most every town square. There, people can purchase Christmas crafts, wonderful cheeses, bananas, nuts and cookies, exotic orchids and bright red poinsettias. The poinsettia is native to Mexico and has been a part of the Christmas celebration there since the 17th century. At that time, Mexican Franciscans incorpo- rated the flowers into their holiday services, and furthered a wonderful legend. It seems that a little boy named Pablo wanted to offer something special to "El Nino", but he had no money. According to legend, the boy gathered some green branches and offered them at the manger. Miraculously, bright red flowers in the shape of stars appeared at the end of every branch! An important Mexican custom is to divide the family into two groups - pilgrims and innkeepers - for a procession reenacting Mary and Joseph's search for lodging in Beth- lehem. When the procession reaches a house with a special Nativity scene, there is much rejoicing and feasting, and the children compete to break open a pinata! It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4" tall and 3" long. It is marked "SC51,Mexico,El Nino,2001,International Resourcing". It is in its original box.

International Resourcing Santa - Pancho Navidad - Mexico

This is an International Santa known as "Pancho Navidad" from International Resourcing. It is the Santa of Mexico. The Inter- national Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. In Mexico, Santa Claus often goes by the name Pancho Navidad. Pancho Navidad crept into Mexican Christmas lore rather recently, but he is gaining popular- ity every year. Pancho Navidad does not traditionally bring gifts in Mexico. Instead, the piņata is the source of Christmas goodies. The piņata is a clay vessel shaped like an animal and covered with bright colored tissue. Mexican children take turns striking at the Piņata with a stick while blindfolded. When the piņata is broken, candy and trinkets fly out. Christmas festivities begin in Mexico nine days before December 25th. Each day a different home in the village serves as the "posadas", which means lodgings. A procession is formed to reenact the journey of Mary and Joseph into Jerusalem. The procession is accompanied by a guitar and Christmas carolers. When the group arrives at the preselected posadas, they place figures representing the Holy Family onto a temporary altar. After the cere- mony, celebrations continue for the rest of the evening. It was retired in 1997. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2" wide. It is marked "SC14,Mexico,Pancho Navidad,1993, International Resourcing,SC14". MONACO "FATHER CHRISTMAS" (RETIRED)

International Resourcing Santa - Father Christmas - Monaco-sold sold

This is an International Santa known as "Father Christmas" from International Resourcing. It is the Santa of Monaco. The Inter- national Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. Set like a sparkling jewel along the Mediterranean Sea bordering southern France, Monaco conjures up fascinating images of a movie star, a prince, and the gambling and social playground of Monte Carlo. But Monaco is also rich in history and tradition with stories and practices that go back hundreds of years. Christmas Eve would be the time when family would gather at their parent's homes. Before sitting down to the evening meal, the youngest of the guests, or the oldest, soaked an olive branch in a glass of old wine. A great fire of pine and laurel branches burned in the fireplace, and with his little branch, the guest traced the Sign of the Cross while briefly commenting on the many virtues of the olive tree. The Christmas loaf of breadu pan de Natale on which four walnuts formed a cross surrounded by several olive twigs would be enjoyed along with other traditional food and drink. Father Christmas may soon pay a visit to the children, dispensing gifts and other traditional treats for children, including mariote e gali-cakes of fougasse, a biscuitlike pastry flavored with orange flower water, almonds and aniseed. Little boys received fougasse in the shape of a chicken (u galu) and little girls received those in the shape of dolls. No doubt the children had a sparkle in their eyes that rivaled the area's sunshine. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2-1/2" wide. It is marked "SC88,Monaco, Father Christmas,2006,International Santas". It is in its original box.

International Resourcing Santa - Black Peter - The Netherlands-sold sold

This is an International Santa known as "Black Peter" of The Netherlands from International Resourcing. The Inter- national Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. In the Netherlands, Christmas gifts are brought by a kindly Bishop called Sinter Klaas and his servant Zwarte Piet(Black Peter). Sinter Klaas and Black Peter arrive on December 6, St. Nicholas Day. They sail in on a boat from Spain, Sinter Klaas astride a white horse with Black Peter walking loyally beside him. Black Peter was added to the Sinter Klaas legend sometime during the middle ages. He originates from the notion that on his birthday, St. Nicholas was able to chain the devil and use him as a servant. Gradually this idea evolved into the image of Black Peter--a mischievous sprite with horns and a soot covered face. He is most often pictured wearing full velvet breeches and a cap with a plumed feather. Black Peter carries a big book which contains a record of the good and bad deeds of children. At Sinter Klaas' bidding, Black Peter drops gifts down the chimney's of good children and bun- dles of birch rods down the chimney's of naughty children. Dutch children leave their wooden clogs by the fireplace filled with hay or carrots for Sinter Klaas' horse. It is into these shoes that Black Peter drops sweets and small toys. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/4" tall and 3" wide. It is marked "SC17, Black Peter, Netherlands, 1995, International Resourcing Services,Inc.". The Inter- national Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. In the Netherlands, Christmas gifts are brought by a kindly Bishop called Sinter Klaas and his servant Zwarte Piet(Black Peter). Sinter Klaas is very closely associated with the legend of St. Nicholas, a bishop that died around 564 A.D. There are many stories about the good deeds of this patron saint. One of the most famous tales involves the three daugh- ters of a poor merchant. The merchant had no dowry money for his daughters to get married. St. Nicholas heard of their plight and dropped three bags of gold down their chimney as a gift. For this reason Sinter Klaas is often depicted carrying three golden balls to symbolize his gifts to the three maidens. In Holland, Sinter Klaas comes to town on December 6th. NEW ZEALAND "FATHER CHRISTMAS" (RETIRED-2008)

International Resourcing Santa - Father Christmas - New Zealand-sold sold

This is an International Santa known as "Father Christmas" of New Zealand from International Resourcing. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. Christmas takes place in the summer in New Zealand, but that doesn't keep "Father Christmas" from making his rounds in a flowing red robe with white trim. Taking advantage of the flourishing gardens around him, Father Christmas poses here surrounded by bright flowers as well as a sweet little lamb and a bag chock full of toys. Santa offers all his visitors the traditional New Zealand Christmas treat-Pavlova. This sweet and light dessert combines whipped egg whites and sugar. It's baked lightly in the oven and decorated with kiwi and strawberries, then topped with lots of whipped cream. In some New Zealand towns Santa makes two appearances a year--one on the actual day of Christmas and another in July, which is mid- winter in the southern hemisphere. This second Christmas allows New Zealanders who remember cold-weather Christmas dishes from other parts of the world to indulge themselves on turkey, roast lamb, and plum pudding. The New Zealand Christmas tree is called Pohutokawa, and it's decorated with bright scar- let-red flowers. While the tree and much of New Zealand's tra- dition fits with the nation's British heritage, the culture of the Maori people now influences Christmas as well. Maori spirits and creatures actually fit in well with the gnomes and elves Europeans associate with Christmas. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2-1/2" wide. It is marked "SC65,Father Christmas, New Zealand,2003,International Resourcing Services,Inc.". It is in its original box.

NICARAGUA "THE THREE KINGS" (RETIRED-2007)

International Resourcing Santa - The Three Kings - Nicaragua

This is an International figurine known as "The Three Kings" from International Resourcing. It is the Nicaraguan version of Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. For Nicaraguans, the Christmas season begins each year on December 7 and 8. That's when they celebrate La Purisima, or the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. They do so by building an altar just inside the entrance of their homes, so it is visible from the street through the open front door. When guests come in to worship at the altar, they are treated to special treats and gifts. The celebration continues through- out the month of December, as children carry tropical flowers to the altar of the Virgin and then sing holiday carols. Then on Christmas Eve, everyone heeds the call of the church bells to Midnight Mass. After kissing the image of the Christ Child in the manger, Nicaraguans return home to open presents they believe are brought by the baby Jesus. The month-long holiday season winds down with the celebration of the "Three Kings" and the feast of the Epiphany on January 6. According to Nicaraguan custom, it is these three richly dressed visitors who bring the main holiday gifts to their children. In antici- pation of the arrival of the Magi, youngsters put their shoes out and fill them with grass for the wise men's camels. After all the Epiphany gifts are opened and admired, the year's celebration concludes with an impressive fireworks display. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4" tall and 4" wide. It is marked "SC66, Nicaragua, The Three Kings,2003,International Resourcing". It is in its original box and packing.

NORTH POLE "SANTA CLAUS"(RETIRED-2008)

International Resourcing Santa - Santa Claus - North Pole

This is an International Santa from the North Pole known as "Santa Claus" from International Resourcing. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. At the top of the globe stands a beacon of anticipation. Nothing but starlight may illuminate the North Pole skies for months, but lights burn brightly year-round with activities to create twinkling of another sort. For 364 days of the year, Santa Claus and his elves work tirelessly in anticipation of the yearly event that brings sparkles to children's eyes. They ready themselves by making lists, checking them twice, and finding out who's been naughty and nice. They assemble the toys, treats, and other items that fulfill youngster's wishes. Then on Christmas Eve, the elves pack Santa's sleigh to the brim with treasures for kids around the world. A little something is usually in store for the boss, as the elves present Santa with a gift as well. From the North Pole Santa Claus will circle the globe, led by his trusty team of reindeer. Thousands of miles must be tra- versed to reach millions of little ones in one evening. Thus, the enchantment of the journey brings amazement to wondering young minds. And hope. INTERNATIONAL SANTA
NORWAY "JULENISSE"(RETIRED-2006)

International Resourcing Santa - Julenisse - Norway-sold sold

This is an International Santa known as "Julenisse" from International Resourcing. It is the Norway Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been dis- continued since International Resourcing closed its doors. From ancient times, children in Norway have appreciated the bounty of "Julenisse". According to legend, this mystical, elf-like character visited homes on Christmas Eve and placed tufts of "lucky" barley stocks here and there. The family then would seek these on Christmas morning, hoping for good luck throughout the year to come. As the story evolved and merged with that of St. Nicholas, "Julenisse" expanded his role and began offering gifts on Christmas Eve as well. The straw dolls and figures he brings with him serve as symbols of those original barley stocks, linking today's "Julenisse" to that long-ago Norse character. Here we see the "Christmas Elf" dressed in a red cap and jacket much like those of St. Nicholas. His long white beard and bag of toys link him to that famous character as well...but his pointy shoes with the bells on the tips are distinctive to "Julenisse"! Another traditional Norwegian story says that only the family cat is privileged to spy "Julenisse" upon his arrival, so here we see a kitty happily observing this very special visitor. Holiday observances in Norway begin at the time of the sol- stice on December 21st as they have since ancient times. Cleaning, cooking and other preparations give way to feast, celebrations and gift-giving lasting many days. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 3-1/2" tall and 4" long. It is marked "SC57,Julenisse,Norway,2002, International Resourcing Services,Inc.". It is in its ori- ginal box and packing.

International Resourcing Santa - Philippino Santa Claus - Philippines

This is the Philippines International Santa known as "Philippinos Santa Claus" from International Resourcing. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. The Philippines boasts to the world that it celebrates the longest Christmas season of any country...anywhere! The holiday begins on December 16, with hanging of outdoor Christmas lanterns fashioned from paper and bamboo. At the same time, nativity scenes and other decorations are placed in most every home with much fanfare. Families begin attending daily Mass at 4:00 a.m. to ask for the blessing of Mary and the baby Jesus: the services are known as "rooster masses" because of their early start time. Even in school, Christmas is the focus of many lessons, with youngsters creating art projects and practicing their spelling by writing "Merry Christmas" and other holiday words on the chalkboard. The children also learn about sharing with those less fortunate: there are frequent gift giveaways in Manila's poorest quarters throughout the holiday season. Celebrations do not conclude until January 6, the day of the Epiphany: a full three weeks of Christmas! "Philippino Santa Claus" plays a starring role in this 21-day festival, bearing gifts for everyone. For tradition, he wears a furry red jacket and cap and a long, white beard, but in keeping with Philippino weather, his pants are clamdiggers and his footwear is a pair of bright red thong sandals. Oh yes! and his wreath is made of tropical flowers: what a colorful sight! It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-3/4" tall and 2-1/2" wide. It is marked "SC35,Philippino Santa Claus,Philippines,1998,International Resourcing Services,Inc.". It is in its original box and packing.

POLAND "ST. NICHOLAS"(RETIRED-2005)

International Resourcing Santa - St. Nicholas - Poland

This is an International Santa known as "St. Nicholas" from International Resourcing. It is the Poland Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been dis- continued since International Resourcing closed its doors. Dressed in glorious robes and bearing hearts and apples, St. Nicholas helps celebrate Christmas in Poland through a host of wonderful traditions and super- stitions. Poles believe that Christmas Eve not only serves as a day for family get-togethers and reconcili- ations--it's also a time when animals can talk and even tell the future! Many Poles can be heard to say, "As goes Christmas Eve, so goes the year", and thus they try their best to be kind, forgiving, jolly and upbeat on this most important of days.

Christmas superstitions in rural Poland often focus on how soon a single girl will be married. If a girl grinds poppy seed on Christmas Eve, legend has it, she can hope for a wedding soon. After dinner, when this girl leaves the house, she listens for the first dog to bark. The direction of the bark indicates where her true love will come from! Many other traditions having to do witha a girl's upcoming marriage focus on picket fences, water, wood, iron, leather, and even dreams

On Christmas Eve, according to tradition, Polish women clean and sweep their houses thoroughly, then cook a traditional meal with 12 dishes. The more each person eats, the more pleasure is thought to be on the way to his or her future. Polish Christmas carols date back to the 1300s, and are sung with great gusto even today. Another wonderful tradition is that of the Polish creche, with annual competitions for the best creche held in Cracow. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2-1/2" wide. It is marked

This is an International Santa known as "Star Man" from International Resourcing. It is one of the Poland Santas or "Gift Givers". The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. In Poland, the star is a Christmas symbol of great importance. On the evening of December 24th, the first star shining in the sky announces that the advent fast is over. At the dinner table an extra place is set in honor of the Christ Child. Straw is placed under the table cloth and on the floor as a reminder that Christ was born in a stable. Special peace wafer's blessed by the church are shared be- fore supper. After supper, the Star Man arrives dressed in a long robe and hat decorated with stars. The Star Man is usually a priest or family friend dressed in disguise. After quizzing the children on their religious instruc- tion, the Star Man rewards them with candy, fruit, and small presents. Frequently, the Star Man is accompanied on his journey by boys in costumes of the three wise men and other children dressed as animals from the nativity scene. A lantern shaped like a star and mounted on a long pole is carried to light the way. In addition to the Star Man, St. Nicholas brings pre- sents on December 6th. This means that Polish children receive presents from two different gift bringers during the Holiday season. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It mea- sures 4-1/2" tall and 2" wide. PORTUGAL "PADRE NICHOLAS"(RETIRED-2001)

International Resourcing Santa - Padre Nicholas - Portugal

This is an International Santa known as "Padre Nicholas" from International Resourcing. It is the Portugal Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been dis- continued since International Resourcing closed its doors. As Christmas approaches in Portugal, families decorate pine trees with stars, tiny ball ornaments, knots, and bright electric lights. They prepare for the arrival of Padre Nicholas and the Three Kings, all of whom are generous gift-givers according to various le- gends. Home decorations add to the festive atmosphere, and include holly, paper ribbons, dried flowers and ele- gant candles.

Food plays a major part in Portuguese Christmas tradition. The favorite entree is boiled codfish, imported from Norway, for Christmas supper, as well as roasted'turkey for Christmas lunch on December 25. Portuguese Christmas candies include sweet vermicelli, or King Cake, in which one piece always has a dry bean. The person who gets a bean in his or her slice of cake must buy another cake for New Year's Eve. The Portuguese also enjoy a special feast just after midnight on Christmas. It is called consoada, and it involves setting extra places at the table for alminhas a penar, or "the souls of the dead". Another custom is to leave crumbs on the hearth for these souls to scoop up, in exchange for a bountiful harvest to come.

Also traditional for Portuguese Christmas is the Yule Log, or fogueira da consoada, which is burned either in the home hearth or in the church yard. The ashes of this log are kept and burned along with pinecones later in the year, during the thunderstorm season. Legend has it that where the smoke of that fire rises, no thunderbolts will strike. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 3" wide. It is marked

RUSSIA "BABOUSCHKA"(RETIRED-1996)

International Resourcing Santa - Russia - Babouschka-SOLD sold

This is an International Santa known as "Babouschka" from International Resourcing. It is one of the Russian Santas. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors.
In old Russia there are several Holiday Gift Bringers. Grandfather Frost is the Russian version of Father Christmas. There is also an elf maiden named Kolyada who rides around in a sleigh on Christmas Eve, rewarding Christmas carolers with presents. The most prominent gift bringer of them all is Babouschka. Babouschka is a grand- motherly figure who wanders through the towns and country- side on Christmas Eve carrying a candle and a basket of gifts. She stops at every home to fill children's stocking with presents and pieces of black bread.
The legend of Bebouschka is similar to that of the Italian gift bearer LeBefana. Babouschka was an old peasant woman who lived in a beautifully kept cottage in the woods. Babouschka was famous for her kindness to travellers and her delicious black bread. It was here that the three wise men stopped on their way to see the Christ child. After resting for a day, they asked Babouschka if she wanted to join them on their journey. She said yes, but told them to go ahead because she wanted to clean her house first. By the time she was finished they were too far ahead for her to catch up, so now she wanders on Christmas Eve in search of the Christ child, leaving gifts and some of her famous black bread for each of the Russian children.
It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2" wide. It is marked

RUSSIA "GRANDFATHER FROST"(RETIRED-1998)

International Resourcing Santa - Russia - Grandfather Frost

This is an International Santa known as "Grandfather Frost" from International Resourcing. It is the Russian Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. After the Russian Revolution, the celebrations surrounding Christmas were changed to the Festival of Winter. Presiding over this festival is Grandfather Frost, a character that looks and acts remarkably like Father Christmas. In many areas of Russia, Grandfather Frost has usurped the role of the traditional gift bringers, Bablusch- ka and Kolyada. However, instead of arriving on Christmas Eve, Grandfather Frost arrives on New Year's Day.
One enduring Russian custom is called the five piles of grain. A sleeping hen is placed in the center of five small piles of grain representing wealth, poverty, death, marriage, and a life of hard work. Whichever pile of grain the hen goes to first when it awakens is the fate of the daughters of the family.
Instead of a Christmas tree, Russians put up a New Year tree. Among the few surviving religious traditions is the breaking of the Advent fast. When the first star appears on Christmas eve the Advent fast is over and a big feast called the Colatzia is eaten. The exchange of cards and presents in Russia takes place only on a very modest scale.
It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 3" wide. It is marked

This is an International Santa known as "Kolyada" from International Resourcing. It is one of the Russian Santas. The International Santa Claus Collection has been dis- continued since International Resourcing closed its doors.
Every Christmas Eve in old Russia, legend has it that a beautiful elf-maiden wearing a long white robe would travel from home to home bearing holiday gifts and treats. Lovely "Kolyada" and her decorated sleigh always won the love and honor of the local children. They would gather in their villages to sing carols in her name, hoping against hope to hear the jingling of her golden bells before they were called off to bed by their parents.
One of "Kolyada's" traditional songs tells of the three inner chambers that appear in every home. One contains the bright moon, the second plays host to the fiery sun, and the third serves as keeper for the stars. The moon represents the man of the house, the sun is the homemaker, and the stars are their adorable children.
Imagine the fun Russian youngsters would have conjuring up images of a pretty gift-giver like our "Kolyada". Her white textured robe features military-style trim in gold, and a furry collar to match her warm, halo-like cap. Her bright eyes shine as she smiles and prepares to descend from her decorated sleigh, ready to deliver a basketful of gifts to the good boys and girls of the community. In the back of her sleigh sits her own pretty little Christmas tree, decorated with a single golden star atop its graceful branches.
It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. The figurine measures 4" tall and 2" wide. It is marked

This is an International Santa known as "New Year's Eve Boy" from International Resourcing. It is one of the Russian Santas. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors.
Under the rule of the Soviet Union, Russians were dissuaded from practicing their traditional Orthodox religion with its gala Christmas traditions. Thus, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day became the biggest and most festive holidays for most Russians. This "New Year's Eve Boy" is ready to celebrate with his colorful ethnic attire, animal helpers, toys and fir trees. He even boasts a set of the traditional nesting dolls in the pocket of his bright vest! Bundled up against the cold as if he's heading to Siberia, the boy has donned a thick cap with long earflaps, red gloves, and fur boots with beautiful border trim. Russians used a different calendar than the rest of the Western world until February 1918. Centuries earlier, they had refused to abide by the Roman calendar, considering it an intrusion on their traditions and faith. Their old system of dates, called the Julian calendar had Christmas and New Year's taking place 13 days later than the Gregorian, or European calendar. The Orthodox faith still celebrates the holidays using the Julian schedule. Ever resourceful and ready for a party, many Russian families celebrate Christmas both on December 25th and January 7th, with two New Year's celebrations taking place on January 1st and 13th respectively!

This is an International Santa known as "Julenisse" from International Resourcing. It is the Scandinavian Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors.
A household elf called Julenisse brings the Christmas gifts in most parts of Denmark and Norway. This fellow is a mischievous gnome who lives in the attic or barn and watches over the household pets and livestock during the year. He can only be seen by the family cat. On Christmas Eve, the Julenisse sneaks around the house and hides presents for the children to find. The Scan- dinavian families must leave a bowl of rice porridge outside the door for Julenisse or he might play tricks on them.
Julenisse is usually represented as a tiny creature with a pointy red cap, a grey beard and a smock. His origins are associated with "the Old Man of the Mound", the ghost of the first settler on a farm. Over the years this spirit evolved into the less frightening "nisse" or elves and finally came to be known as Julenisse.
Although the Julemann (Santa Claus) is creeping into Scandinavian culture, the Julenisse are dearest to the hearts of Danes and Norwegians and still play a large part in Scandinavian Christmas tradition.

International Resourcing Santa - D'Yed Moroz- Siberia

This is an International Santa known as "D'Yed Moroz" from International Resourcing. It is the Siberian Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors.
Deep snow, bundled up, rosey cheeked ice skaters, frosty air, and horse-drawn sleighs with tinkling bells inspire images of a winter wonderland. Yet, even in the icy cold of Siberia, warmth pervaded the villages, particularly as the end of the year approached the new.
For centuries the December 6 Feast of St. Nicholas was observed throughout Russia. The revolution suppressed Christian practices, and St. Nicholas and Christmas could no longer be celebrated. The Festival of Winter began encompassing many tra- ditions associated with Christmas into the New Year's holiday. Encapsulating the spirit of the season, the kindly figure Grandfather Frost emerged.
Legend has it that D'yed Moroz lived deep in the Russian woods and came to town in a sleigh. On New Year's Eve the white-bearded, fur trimmed, wizard looking figure roamed the streets. He went door to door delivering gifts to good children and over- looking those who behaved badly. Under a starry night the singing of the kolyadi among carolers, originally folk songs commemorating the renewal of the year, might be heard while children await their magical fate. To the fortunate, a set of stacking Matrioshka dolls, books, clothes, toys, or shoes might be found under the New Year's tree.

International Resourcing Santa - The Three Magi - Spain

This is an International Santa known as "The Three Magi" from International Resourcing. It is the Spain Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been dis- continued since International Resourcing closed its doors.
Gifts are brought in Spain on January 6th by the three Magi. On January 5th, eve of Epiphany, elaborate celebrations herald their arrival. In rural areas, villagers carry rattles and bells and form a procession to the edge of town in order to meet the three kings as they ride in. These efforts are always futile and parents must explain to their children that the Magi must have come into town by another route. The disappointed children then eat the sweets and throw away the straw meant to feed the traveling kings and their horses and camels.
The families then reassemble in the village church where lo and behold Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar and their entourage are waiting. Before retiring, the children of Spain set out their shoes along with more straw and cakes and water. In the morningthey find their shoes stuffed with toys and goodies left by the three Magi.
Spain has a rich heritage of Christmas traditions. In addition to their visit by the Magi, families also exchange gifts on Christmas morning. Christmas dinner includes roast turkey and baked red cabbage stuffed with fried onions and peppers. A sweet treat called Marzipan is a holiday favorite. Christmas dinner is never eaten until after midnight. In even the humblest of homes of Spain families gather around elaborate nativity scenes rather than the Christmas tree. The Christ child is laid in the manger on Christmas eve as a highlight of the evening. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4" tall and 3-1/4" wide. It is marked

International Resourcing Santa - Jultomten Ornament- Sweden

This is an International Santa known as "Jultomten" from International Resourcing. It is the Sweden Santa figurine and ornament. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors.

The Jultomten is a gnomish Father Christmas that brings Swedish children their Christmas presents. Good little children get toys, bad little children get bunches of sticks. The Jultomten is often given characteristics common to the Julenissen of Denmark and Norway. He is often thought to live in the outhouse, attic or barn. Jultomten is considered the household guardian and his goodwill is assured by leaving him a bowl of porridge on Christmas Eve. He is on friendly terms with the household cat but is very afraid of candles.

Swedes have many distinctive Christmas customs. One such custom is to honor St. Lucia, the Queen of light. On December 13th, the eldest daughter of a household dresses in a white dress with a red sash, a crown of holly, and candles on her head. She wakes up early and serves coffee and cakes to the whole family. Another Swedish custom is to accompany each Christmas present with an elaborate verse, humorously hinting at the contents of the package. Straw ornaments and a straw goat call Julbrock are other singular aspects of a Christmas in Sweden.

They are in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. The figurine measures 4" tall and 2-1/2" wide. It is marked

This is an International Santa known as "The Christkindli" from International Resourcing. It is one of the Switzerland gift givers. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors.
Lovely as an angel, The Christkindli has supplanted St. Nicholas in much of Switzerland as the bearer of holiday gifts. Legends tell us that this sweet-faced child travels from house to house in her own little sleigh drawn by six reindeer. Inside she sits, surrounded by decorated fir trees luscious foods, and toys for good boys and girls.
Santa Claus is not completely forgotten in Switzerland, how- ever. In the country he often heads a parade of school boys who walk from home to home, gathering gifts and donations. After all houses have been visited, the group takes all the gifts to their local town hall, where they are distributed fairly to all the children in the vicinity.
It is traditional in Switzerland for every family to have its own holiday tree, around which everyone gathers to sing carols. Reading St. Luke's story of the birth of Christ is also a major tradition, as is enjoying the glorious Swiss scenery as they visit friends and neighbors to share Christmas cookies. It is said that to enter a home at holiday time and not eat something steals Christmas from that household, so sampling goodies is a big part of the Swiss holiday tradition.
It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/4" tall, 2" wide, 3-1/2" long. It is marked

International Resourcing Santa - Samichlaus - Switzerland

This is an International Santa known as "Samichlaus" from International Resourcing. It is the Switzerland Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. In many areas of Switzerland chil- dren are visited by Samichlaus, who in Protestant districts appears on St. Nicholas eve, riding a lit- tle grey donkey. His arrival is often celebrated by a parade through the streets. Men dress up in enormous hats lit from the inside and are accompanied by tooting horns, ringing bells, and cracking whips.
In some areas of Switzerland, we find Samichlaus married to St. Lucy. St. Lucy has long braids, a round cap, and a silk apron. St. Lucy makes the rounds with Samichlaus on Christmas eve and brings presents for the girls. THAILAND "SANTA CLAUS"(RETIRED-2000)

International Resourcing Santa - Thai Santa - Thailand

This is an International Santa known as "Thai Santa" from International Resourcing. It is the Thailand Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors.
In Thailand, Santa Claus plays a role in the annual New Year's Day celebration on January 1st. Yet this is only one of several yearly New Year's holidays in this ancient Asian country. In April the Thais celebrate Songkran, or Thai New Year. What's more, the Chi- nese population marks the Chinese New Year in February
Both the Christian and Thai calendars change to the New Year on January 1st, although the Buddhist era of the Thai calendar is 543 years older than the one we know as "A.D." In addition to Santa Claus' visit, January 1st finds homes and classrooms decorated with New Year's trees, and Thais exchange cards and gifts to honor the occasion. Then in April, for Songkran, Thais clean their houses inside and out to wash away the old year, then bathe themselves and pour water over the Buddha image to start the new year fresh.
Like Western Santas, Thailand's St. Nick often wears a bright red costume - but his is likely to be adorned with elegant Asian motifs rather than fur trim. We see Santa carrying a decorated staff as well as a basket laden with special gifts hand-chosen for the children he will soon visit.
It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2" wide. It is marked
"SC38, 1999, Thai Santa, Thailand, International Resources LLC". It is in its original box and packing.

INTERNATIONAL SANTA
TURKEY "ST. NICHOLAS"(RETIRED-2004)

International Resourcing Santa - St. Nicholas - Turkey-sold sold

This is an International Santa ornament known as "St. Nicholas" from International Resourcing. It is the Turkey Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since In- ternational Resourcing closed its doors. While the legend of St. Nicholas extends all over the world, the "real" St. Nicholas lived in Turkey! St. Nicholas was the bishop of an area called Myra, located in southwestern Turkey, during the early fourth century. While the details of his life are sketchy, it is known that he did many good deeds involving both children and sailors. A study of medieval and Renaissance artwork find this image appearing in a number of paintings, stained glass windows and carvings. The composite "look" of these many works of art shows St. Nick to be a tall, dignified man. Unlike the jolly American Santa with his smile and "ho, ho, ho," the Turkish St. Nicholas was quite serious...even severe. His fame grew as the centuries passed, and he bacame established as the patron saint of chil- dren, unmarried girls and sailors in both the Roman and Orthodox churches. His original feast day was December 6, but eventually it was moved to December 25 by Pope Julius I to celebrate the birth of Christ. St. Nicholas lost popularity during the Reformation, except in Protestant Holland, where Sinter Klass filled wooden shoes with gifts. Today both in Turkey and around the world, St. Nicholas has been re-estab- lished as one of the most powerful symbols of Christmas. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-3/4" tall and 2" wide. It is marked "SC54, 2001,St.Nicholas,Turkey,International Resources LLC". It is in its original box and packing.

THE UNITED STATES "CHRISTMAS EVE SANTA"(RETIRED)

International Resourcing Santa - Christmas Eve Santa - United States-SOLD sold

This is an International Santa known as "Christmas Eve Santa" from International Resourcing. It is one of the United States Santas. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors.
The very idea of "Christmas Eve Santa" fills every good boy and girl with happy anticipation of holiday presents and treats. In this classic rendition of Good St. Nick, we see this jolly character getting ready to slide down the chimney and visit the first of millions of homes on Christmas Eve. One of Santa's reindeer friends keeps guard up on the snow- covered roof to make sure no problems arise. Meanwhile, we all marvel at how Santa can make it down the chimney with his rotund figure and bag bursting with gifts. It's clear that Mrs. Claus must be a wonderful cook....and that Santa's elves outdo themselves year after year creating gifts to pack into that bottomless bag! For generations, children have delighted to the stories of the "The Night Before Christmas", and imagined how Santa would find his way into their own living rooms. That's why they leave him milk and cookies before toddling off to bed..if the treats are gone the next morning, they have proof that Santa indeed was there to visit! Of course most children try their best to stay awake and see St. Nick for themselves, but they hardly ever succeed. Santa seems to know when he can safely arrive and arrange his toys and gifts without being discovered.
It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It mea- sures 4-1/2" tall and 3" wide. It is marked
"SC70,Christmas Eve Santa,United States Of America,2004,International Resourcing Santas". He is in his original box.

International Resourcing Santa - Patriotic Santa Claus - United States

This is an International Santa known as "Patriotic Santa Claus" from International Resourcing. It is the United States Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. In a time when all Americans have rededicated themselves to country, hearth, and home, this "Patriotic Santa Claus" is doing his part to bring Old Glory and the American message of freedom to everyone during the holiday season. Posing under the Stars and Stripes, Santa's brought along the traditional symbol of freedom, a bold bald eagle, to show that "United We Stand" as a nation and a people. Instead of his traditional green accessories, this all- American St. Nick wears a blue and white star-studded vest and red and white striped pants under his red, fur-trimmed robe. Instead of the usual toys for good girls and boys, Santa's most prominent gift offering this season is a model of the inspirational and beautiful Statue of Liberty. This "Lady Liberty" sculpture rises from Santa's pouch, holding her lamp high to show the world that America still reigns as the refuge of all who seek liberty and opportunity. In ad- dition to the usual Christmas carols, Santa stands ready to lead his friends in a rousing chorus or two of "God Bless America", "America the Beautiful", "The Star Spangled Banner", and "God Bless the U.S.A." VENEZUELA "CHRIST CHILD WITH ANGEL"(RETIRED)

International Resourcing Santa - Christ Child with Angel - Venezuela-sold sold

This is an International Santa known as "Christ Child with Angel" from International Resourcing. It is the Venezuelan Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. According to Venezuelan tradition, the Christ Child himself is responsible for bringing gifts on Christmas Day--often assisted by a guardian angel or two. The holiday celebration begins on December 24th and often continues until January 6th, the day when the Magi paid their visit to the Baby Jesus. Catholic re- ligious rituals dominate many of the Venezuelan Christmas customs, but since this nation has been influenced by many cultures, there are other features added to the festivities. Most families display a rather elaborate nativity scene at home, and then add the Baby Jesus to the manger at the stroke of midnight on Christmas. The Christmas Eve dinner features hallacas, pan de jamon, pavo, pernil de cochino, and dulce de Lochosa. After drinking the delicious homemade beverage named Ponche creme, young people roller skate to midnight Mass. On the way they may hear Christmas songs called Parrandas o Aguinaldo or the traditional, regional music known as Maracaibo. The festivities continue through New Years, when each person puts 12 grapes into a glass of champagne. At midnight, they eat one grape for each strike of the New Year's clock, and then drink the champagne. Another New Year's tradition is to make a life- size doll of Judas and light fireworks to burn him-symbolizing the end of the old year and a fresh start for the new year. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 2" wide. It is marked "#SC69, Christ Child with Angel, Venezuela, 2003, International Resourcing Services". She is in her original box.

INTERNATIONAL SANTA
WALES "WELSH FATHER CHRISTMAS"(RETIRED - 2002)

International Resourcing Santa - Welsh Father Christmas - Wales-sold sold

This is an International Santa known as "Welsh Father Christmas" from International Resourcing. It is the Wales Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Re- sourcing closed its doors. As early as the year 700 A.D, Christmas was considered one of the three main festivals of the year in Wales--along with Epiphany and Easter. St. Augustine introduced the Anglo-Saxons to the celebration as part of their conversion to Christianity circa 600 A.D. Within a few years of St. Augustine's arrival, 10,000 British people converted to the faith, with many more to follow in the years to come. Today in Wales, celebrants await the arrival of "Welsh Father Christmas" by singing traditional songs in wonderful esteddfods, or "carol songs". Trained singers lead the event, but everyone in the village joins in. Another tradition is the church service of the Plygain, which begins at 4:00 a.m. Christmas morning and lasts until sunrise. Later in the day, many Welsh indulge in taffy-pulling after opening their gifts from "Father Christmas". The jolly old gent arrived with his basketful of gifts, bearing his own little Christmas tree and a halo of holly around his head. His flowing red cloak protects a robe of rich material covered with golden stars-- and "Welsh Father Christmas" looks ready to join in the musical cele- bration: he has his own horn tucked in the green sash of his robe! At his feet are more gifts he plans to distribute: what a jolly visitor for Christmas morning! It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-3/4" tall and 3" wide. It is marked "#SC34, Welsh Father Christmas, Wales, 1998, International Resourcing LLC". It is in its original box.

INTERNATIONAL SANTA
YUGOSLOVIA "DEDA MRAZ"(RETIRED)

International Resourcing Santa - Deda Mraz - Yugoslovia

This is an International Santa known as "Deda Mraz" from Inter- national Resourcing. It is the Yugoslovian Santa. The International Santa Claus Collection has been discontinued since International Resourcing closed its doors. The fusion of peoples that composed Yugoslavia brought together centuries of customs and rituals. In parts of Slovakia, where many Yugoslavians had their roots, early pagan practices during the Winter Solstice gave way to other folk traditions. A dogwood berry was the first food to be eaten Christmas Day to ensure good health. Walnuts, symbolizing fertility, were obligatory holiday tree decorations, and apples were popular too. Colored candles, reminiscent of the sun's warmth, illuminated branches. Red, be- lieved a protective color acting against bad spells, wound around the boughs as ribbon. As the cycle of customs progressed, many characters who brought gifts during this time of one period ending and another beginning appeared. One was the Bo_i_Bata(Christmas Boy), a main figure in children's festivities surrounding Christmas and New Year. St. Nicholas soon replaced Bo_i_Bata. The legend across the towns of Serbia to the capital Belgrade depicted a sturdy old man with a long white beard and huge bag of gifts. St. Nicholas would visit well-behaved children on the night before his feast day riding on a white horse. Children must clean their shoes and put them in from the door in preparation for his visit. In the morning wide-eyed children would find gifts he'd left behind. The political climate changed in the area but Christmas and New Year weathered the transformation with a new character. Grandfather Frost became an acceptable figure as religion fell to political influence. The kindly old man continues to fulfill the role of charity and giving. It is in excellent condition; no chips or cracks. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 3" wide. It is marked "#SC82,Deda Mraz, Yugoslovian, 2005, International Santas". He is in his original box.
